Tales & Scales is currently Touring the Following Works...

The streets of Hamelin resound with the frantic scurrying of rats! Tales & Scales reinvents the time-honored story of The Pied Piper with electrifying hip-hop influenced music, lively dance, the colorful poetry of Robert Browning, and their trademark transformations. The oboe becomes a squawking rat, the bass trombone an elaborate trap, and the polyphonic super-flute of the Pied Piper leads everyone who hears it to a land of mystery and delight. Composer Randall Woolf, who wrote the ballet of Where the Wild Things Are, creates an electro-acoustic soundscape with live music, vocal and instrumental sampling, and turntable. In Tales & Scales’ new musictale, directed by Cincinnati Conservatory’s Michael Burnham, a normal town is turned upside down and a community learns the value of honesty and generosity.

'Twas brillig, and the slithy toves
Did gyre and gimble in the wabe:
All mimsy were the borogoves,
And the mome raths outgrabe.
The opening words of Lewis Carroll’s whimsical poem may not make much sense, but our latest musictale makes them all clear. Part puzzle, part adventure, part frumious fable, JABBERWOCKY brings to life the mythical battle with a whiffling monster. In one vorpal swirl of rhymes and rhythms, the tale is told from three completely different perspectives. Come along for the frabjous fun! Music composed by Doug Lofstrom. Directed by Gary Race.

Renny Hall is a little girl with a big imagination that seems to always be getting her into trouble. Her home is an apartment building near an inner-city junkyard where all it takes is a little resourcefulness and a vivid imagination to enter a kingdom of magical transformations. When events conspire to threaten both the junkyard and her home, Renny brings all of her creative resources and ingenuity to bear as she learns how to pair her imagination with responsibility to help those around her. City sounds and junkyard jams insure that kids and adults alike will leave with a kick in their step! 50 minutes (add 15 minutes for T&S introduction and instrument demonstrations). Orchestral version available 2005-2006.

Returning in 2008-09:

Irish melodies collide with eccentric characters, jaunty dances, and a fire-breathing saxophone in the return of Tales & Scales’ beloved Musictale The Little Dragon. Created by internationally acclaimed storyteller Jay O’Callahan with staging by American opera director and T&S veteran Gary Race, this timeless tale of caring, courage, and the power of the imagination will leave young audiences with warm hearts and a kick in their step. The Little Dragon charts the growing friendship of a young girl named Elizabeth and a lonely dragon struggling to breathe fire. Join in an adventure that begins in the pages of a simple book and travels to the farthest reaches of the imagination. Music by Scott Wheeler. Choreography by Deborah Sunya Moore. Orchestral version available.

*T&S performances that include introductions and instrument demonstrations run 40-65 minutes.
